Dry Mouth: Why It Matters for Your Oral Health

Dry Mouth: Why It Matters for Your Oral Health

Saliva plays an important role in keeping your mouth healthy. It helps wash away food particles, neutralise acids produced by bacteria, protects your teeth from decay and makes it easier to chew, swallow and speak. When your mouth does not produce enough saliva, you may experience a condition known as dry mouth.

Dry mouth can be caused by a range of factors, including certain medications, dehydration, medical conditions, cancer treatments, smoking, vaping and mouth breathing. It is a common problem that can affect people of all ages.

A persistently dry mouth can increase your risk of tooth decay, gum disease, bad breath and oral infections. Some people also notice difficulty eating dry foods, changes in taste or a burning sensation in the mouth.

There are several ways to help relieve dry mouth. Drinking water regularly, chewing sugar-free gum containing and avoiding tobacco may help stimulate saliva production or reduce discomfort. Saliva substitutes, moisturising mouth gels and sprays can also provide relief. Products specifically designed for dry mouth, such as Biotène or Oral7, may help keep your mouth comfortable. Your dental clinician may also recommend high-fluoride products if your risk of tooth decay is increased.

If you frequently experience a dry mouth, it is important to mention it at your dental appointment. Identifying the underlying cause can help protect your oral health and improve your comfort.
